Summer refreshment for the soul

Coolness and revival in the mountains

“Summer escape” refers to the annual pilgrimage from city to country as well as the actual destination itself. In other words, following the refreshing call of the Alps is simultaneously a path and a goal.

The German expression “Sommerfrische” has its roots in Venetian Italian. Rather than referring blandly to “going for a walk”, they say instead “Prendere il fresco” – essentially, “taking the fresh air”. It came into German through its usage in Bolzano. From the hot valley bottom, people would escape to cool summer residences up on the Ritten.

Oftentimes, “summer escape” references temperatures and a change of location. But that dwells solely in its physical attributes. Coolness and refreshment are also craved by the spirit since, as Prentice Mulford once said, “What pleases the eye refreshes the mind, and what refreshes the mind refreshes the body.” And allow us to extend that sentiment: likewise, what pleases the palate.

In the midst of the Alps, you will find these picturesque retreats and energy sources. Set out on your personal path, arrive, and then let yourself go.
