"There will be wine..."

“…when we are no more, so let’s live life joyously as long as we may.” once sang Hans Moser and Paul Hörbiger ardently. Our approach to wine isn’t quite so apocalyptic, though if the recent months have taught us anything, it is that get-togethers over a fine wine are no longer as matter of course as they used to be. In this regard, we are perhaps best-guided by a well-worn German maxim: “Celebrate whenever the opportunity presents itself.”

In our Castle Hotels & Mansions family, wine has always played a central role. We have winegrowers by whom you can reside, winegrowers by whom you can celebrate, and winegrowers who simply grow wine.

Schloss Kapfenstein and Weingut Winkler-Hermaden, Styria

Residing at a Winery

Weingut Winkler-Hermaden and Schloss Kapfenstein

Schloss Kapfenstein lies surrounded by vineyards, high up in the Vulkanland region of Styria. A truly magical place, with hosts that are more magical still. It was Georg and Margot Winkler-Hermaden who shaped the fortunes of the winery. Under them, the original 4 hectares of land used to cultivate wine were multiplied tenfold. Today, their sons Wolfgang, Thomas and Christof all work on the estate and continue the innovative spirit. 21 varieties of grape are cultivated here according to strict organic principles. Daughter Katharina, together with her husband Johannes, runs Hotel & Restaurant Schloss Kapfenstein. Under the culinary direction of Martin Winkler-Hermaden, Gourmet Days have currently been proclaimed at Schloss Kapfenstein. So, what more are we waiting for!

Schloss Englar in Eppan

Residing at a Winery

Schloss & Weingut Englar

We need waste but few words on the beauty of South Tyrol. Where the Alps kiss the Mediterranean climate, only fabulous things can possibly result. And in the midst of this we discover Schloss Englar, where wine has been cultivated since time immemorial. The climate, the soils and a love for nature combine to lend the castle wines their unique character. Since 2014, they now also press their own wines. All of the grapes come from their own land and are then processed and bottled at the Gutshof, which rises above the vineyards. Their assortment of wines includes: Weissburgunder, Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Gewürztraminer, Vernatsch and Blauburgunder. Needless to say, in the 500-year-old West Wing with eight guest rooms, you will also reside in splendor.

Weingut FJ Gritsch

The interplay between ancient and modern is like a common thread running through everything we do and who we are. Surrounded by ancient walls, we are proud to preserve traditions whilst never standing still for a moment. This straddling of two worlds is something we also encounter at Weingut Gritsch. On the one hand, we find the historic Mauritiushof on the church square in Spitz, on the other, the kalmuck cellars, which well and truly embrace state-of-the-art technology. The Mauritiushof was built back in the 13th century, serving at that time as a grape collection station for the monks. Since 1799, the historic estate has been the property of the Gritsch family. Meanwhile, seven generations have continued a centuries-old tradition of passion for wine growing.
